Helping Montréal’s most vulnerable children

Lucie-Anne is so happy, because this year, thanks to your generosity, she will attend that great soccer camp everyone raves about.

She’ll be able to play against the best girls in her age group and show everyone that she, too, can excel at the game. And that is a good thing, because Lucie-Anne’s never had much confidence in herself. It has to be said that a childhood spent taking care of her mother, who is an alcoholic, hasn’t enabled her to develop self-esteem. But gradually, since her placement with the Centre jeunesse de Montréal and the help of its team, that’s been rebuilt and she now feels ready to go show everyone just what she can do with a soccer ball.

During the past 20 years, the Fondation du Centre jeunesse de Montréal has provided close to $8 million in support to the children receiving services from the Centre jeunesse de Montréal (CJM). Through myriad small ways—sports and cultural activities, summer camps, tutoring, bursaries, support for families in order to avoid out-of-home placements, assistance with moving into an apartment—the Fondation’s help can make a huge difference.

Enabling all children to fulfill their potential

Every year, the Centre jeunesse de Montréal provides services for close to 13,000 children, 82% of whom fall under the Youth Protection Act. These children have experienced neglect, mistreatment, and physical, sexual, or psychological abuse. Their confidence in themselves and their trust in adults, as well as their ability to interact with their peers and other people around them, have all been compromised. Furthermore, they find it very difficult to envision a future.

The team at the Centre jeunesse de Montréal working every day with these children soon come up against a lack of financial resources. That’s where the Fondation du Centre jeunesse de Montréal comes in. The government does not subsidize any of the programs funded by the Fondation. Indeed, none of them would exist without the support of its donors.

Since 1998, it has been the Fondation du Centre jeunesse de Montréal’s mission to mobilize the community and provide support for the Centre jeunesse de Montréal, whose aim is the well-being and social integration of children and young people on the island of Montréal. That mission is achieved through innovative programs such as:

- Promoting self-esteem and healthy lifestyle habits: provide young people with positive experiences to help them become more aware of and fulfill their potential.

- Encouraging young people to stay in school: empower them in their educational journey and foster their success.

- Prevention and support for families: help keep children in their family environment;

- Transitioning toward independent living and reintegration into the community: equip young people to be self-sufficient and, ultimately, reduce the rate of homelessness and crime, as well as social inequality.

- Les Étincelles: offer youngsters experiences that will bring a gleam of happiness to their eyes.

In order to help these children, the Fondation conducts fundraising campaigns, and holds two annual events: La Nuit d’Eden, which generated a total of $120,000 in 2018, and La Grande Séduction, the third edition of which was held on May 9, 2019 and raised $365,000.

“For two decades now, the Fondation du Centre jeunesse de Montréal has worked diligently to support the CJM in developing and implementing its programs for young people,” says Pierre Piché, Vice-President of Power Corporation. “Those programs are based on the conviction that, given the support and reassurance they need, all children and adolescents can become caring, responsible citizens. Power Corporation is proud to support the Fondation du Centre jeunesse de Montréal in its work to help the city’s young people.”
